Teaching someone a new skill that requires thought and builds confidence is priceless. I had the opportunity to work with a group of students who were enrolled in a crafts class at South Kitsap High School. None of these students had been taught to stitch. Not a single one. I was quite surprised, and thrilled that I would be able to teach just that. This lesson started out with mastering the basic straight stitch, the back stitch, and a variety of other stitches that are used in embroidery. All of the students took up their hoops and needles and got straight to work. I watched them all carefully thread their needles, tie their floss and get to work. They were asked to draw the stitches they were learning, and master three to start. They drew three line drawings and chose one to embroider. At the end of the lesson they had all stitched for 6 hours and created a drawing using stitches. We had a lovely time. Thank you Mr. Narus for welcoming me into your class!
